The remains of a village that disappeared beneath one of England’s largest reservoirs nearly half a century ago have emerged once again, as severe drought sends water levels falling at Rutland Water.
Stone foundations and other traces of Nether Hambleton, a rural settlement demolished before the surrounding valley was flooded in the 1970s, have become visible along the reservoir’s receding shoreline.
The haunting remains offer a rare glimpse of a landscape that was deliberately transformed to secure water supplies for a growing population — and of the communities that had to make way for it.
Nether Hambleton was one of several small settlements affected by the enormous engineering project that created Rutland Water. Residents were relocated, buildings were demolished and thousands of acres of countryside eventually disappeared beneath the reservoir.
Now, exceptionally dry conditions have temporarily brought part of that lost landscape back into view.
The lost villages of the Hambleton peninsula
Before Rutland Water existed, the area was a patchwork of farmland, roads, houses and small communities around the Hambleton peninsula.
Hambleton itself has a history stretching back centuries. The settlement is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, but archaeological evidence indicates that people occupied the surrounding landscape much earlier.
Over the years the community developed into several distinct settlements known as Upper Hambleton, Middle Hambleton and Nether Hambleton.
Upper Hambleton occupied higher ground and survived the creation of the reservoir. Today it is the village of Hambleton, and is situated on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by Rutland Water.
Middle and Nether Hambleton were not so fortunate.
Nether Hambleton stood on lower ground close to the River Gwash. It was a small agricultural community whose cottages, farms and surrounding fields formed part of a rural landscape that had changed comparatively slowly for generations.
That changed during the 20th century as increasing demand for water led authorities to consider the Gwash Valley as the site of a major new reservoir.
Construction of what was originally known as Empingham Reservoir became one of the largest civil engineering projects ever undertaken in the area.
The scheme involved damming the Gwash Valley near Empingham and creating a vast artificial lake capable of supplying water to communities across the East Midlands.
For the people living within the proposed reservoir area, however, the project meant losing homes and farmland.
Residents of Nether Hambleton and other affected communities were relocated before buildings were demolished. Farms, cottages and farmhouses were cleared as preparations for flooding progressed.
Construction of the reservoir was completed in 1976, according to the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, although it took roughly another three years for the enormous basin to fill.
More than 3,000 acres of countryside were submerged. At full capacity, the reservoir covers more than four square miles and reaches a maximum depth of about 34 metres, or 112ft. It became one of the largest artificial bodies of water in Western Europe.
The surviving Upper Hambleton was transformed in the process. What had once been elevated ground overlooking a river valley became a peninsula projecting deep into the new reservoir.
Nether Hambleton effectively disappeared from the landscape.
Village foundations return to daylight
Demolition did not remove every trace of the settlement. Foundations, sections of stonework and other remnants remained on the valley floor when the water rose around them. Usually they lie concealed beneath Rutland Water, invisible to visitors walking along its shores.
Periods of exceptionally low water can change that.
The drought of 2026 has caused the reservoir to retreat sufficiently for some of the remains of Nether Hambleton to emerge again, exposing outlines and stonework from buildings abandoned almost 50 years ago.
Their appearance provides an unusual physical connection between the modern reservoir and the countryside that preceded it.
It is also a striking indication of how far water levels have fallen.
Drought reveals the past
The East Midlands officially entered drought status in August following months of unusually dry weather.
According to the Environment Agency, rainfall across the region had remained below average for five consecutive months. The spring and summer period was the driest since 1995, while July was reported as the driest on record.
The East Midlands joined Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire, Kent and East Sussex, and Solent and the South Downs in drought status as authorities responded to deteriorating water resources.
Extreme heat has compounded the problem, with temperatures in parts of England forecast to reach as high as 38C.
Tony Grayling, strategic drought lead at the Environment Agency and chairman of the National Drought Group, warned that conditions were expected to deteriorate without prolonged rainfall.
“Drought conditions are worsening and will continue to do so until we see significant and sustained rainfall,” he said.
The Environment Agency has urged households to reduce unnecessary water consumption, warning that prolonged dry conditions are putting pressure on agriculture, rivers and wildlife as well as public water reserves.
