Archaeologists have identified hundreds of previously unknown monumental funerary structures across the Atbai Desert in northeastern Africa using satellite imagery, revealing evidence of a vast and sophisticated ancient pastoral culture stretching across thousands of square kilometres.
The discoveries were made as part of the Atbai Survey Project, an international research initiative involving scientists from several institutions, including Dr. Maria Carmela Gatto of the Institute of Mediterranean and Oriental Cultures at the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Researchers identified 280 large funerary structures across a region extending from southern Egypt to the border of Eritrea. Of those, 260 were discovered for the first time solely through the analysis of satellite images from platforms including Google Earth and Bing Maps.
According to Dr. Gatto, the findings demonstrate that the monumental stone structures were not isolated sites but part of a widespread cultural tradition dating back to the 4th and 3rd millennia BC.
“We are not dealing with individual monuments, but with a vast cultural tradition spanning thousands of square kilometres,” Gatto said.
The structures, known as Atbai Enclosure Burials (AEB), consist of large stone tombs surrounded by circular or oval enclosures ranging from several metres to more than 80 metres in diameter. Seen from above, the monuments appear as enormous stone circles scattered across the desert landscape.
Within the enclosures, archaeologists have identified human and animal burials, smaller stone constructions, and burial mounds.
The discoveries were recently published in the journal *African Archaeological Review* and are reshaping understanding of ancient pastoral societies in northeastern Africa.
Today, the Atbai Desert is an arid and inhospitable landscape of rocky plains, dry river valleys, and sparse water sources located between the Nile Valley and the Red Sea. However, several thousand years ago the region experienced the African Humid Period, when significantly higher rainfall transformed the desert into grasslands capable of supporting large herds of grazing animals.

Despite lying between the well-studied ancient civilisations of Egypt and Nubia, the archaeology of the Atbai region remained poorly understood for decades.
The use of remote sensing technology allowed researchers to survey enormous desert areas far more efficiently than traditional field exploration methods.
Scientists believe the funerary complexes point to a level of social organisation and cultural complexity among ancient pastoral communities that had previously been underestimated.
Similar monumental burial traditions have also been documented in Libya, Niger, Chad, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and Djibouti, suggesting that pastoral populations across Africa and Arabia may have shared ideas concerning social hierarchy, livestock symbolism, and funerary practices.
One of the best-preserved and most extensively studied sites is the funerary complex at Wadi Khashab in Egypt’s Eastern Desert. Excavations conducted by Polish archaeologists from the University of Warsaw uncovered 25 burials within the enclosure.
At the centre of the complex was a human burial surrounded by cattle, sheep, and the remains of a child. Radiocarbon dating revealed that the monument continued to be used and modified for nearly two thousand years after its original construction, indicating that the site retained cultural significance for successive generations.
Animal burials, particularly those involving cattle, appear to have held important symbolic and religious meaning within these ancient pastoral societies.
“The importance of animals was reflected in the organisation of cemetery space,” Dr. Gatto explained. “In some tombs, the central burial was surrounded by graves of cattle and other animals. This arrangement may indicate the existence of social hierarchy and elite status connected to livestock ownership.”
Most of the funerary sites were constructed near ancient water sources, seasonal river valleys, and grazing areas, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the environment by their builders.
Satellite imagery has also revealed traces of ancient pastoral routes surrounding many of the cemeteries. These pathways, formed by repeated movements of humans and livestock across the desert, provide further evidence of how pastoral communities organised and used the landscape thousands of years ago.
Researchers say the scale of the monuments indicates considerable labour coordination and social planning. Estimates suggest that constructing a medium-sized stone enclosure could have required more than 160 days of work by a single individual, or several days of labour by a large organised group.
Although researchers believe most examples in Egyptian territory have now been identified, large areas of Sudan may still contain undiscovered structures. Future phases of the project are expected to employ machine learning technology to help locate additional sites hidden within the desert landscape.
