Roman Londinium
Roman Londinium

Londinium Tour – Sunday 14 July – 10.00 am

The tour of Londinium takes you back to AD 43 to see the ancient monuments and routes of the major streets that paved the way for the City of London.

Roman London (Latin: Londinium) was established around 43 AD. It served as a major commercial centre for the Roman Empire until its abandonment during the 5th century. The name “Londinium” is thought to be pre-Roman (and possibly pre-Celtic) in origin. Following its foundation in the mid-1st century, early Roman London occupied a relatively small area, roughly equivalent in size to Hyde Park at 350 acres (1.4 km2). The 19th-century antiquarian Roach Smith estimated its length from the Tower of London west to Ludgate at about one mile; and from London Wall in the north to the Thames bank around half a mile.

Tour includes : Roman Fort, Roman Walls, Roman Bastion Towers, Roman Ampitheatre, Roman Wharf, Temple of Mithras, Roman Forum/Basilica, London Bridge, Roman Mosaics and viewing of the roman artifacts discovered.

Tour is limited to 20 persons – Attendance is free.  (First come, first served) Duration – 4-5 hours. There is a small entry fee for access to the Roman Amphitheater. For those wishing to grab a late lunch, we will continue onto St Katherines Docks and the Dickens Pub.

Roman Verulamium

Verulamium Tour – Saturday 15 June – 10.00 am

The tour of Verulamium takes you on a scenic tour through the parks of St Albans, following the route of the Roman Walls and remains of this once great roman town.

Verulamium was an ancient town in Roman Britain. It was sited in the southwest of the modern city of St Albans in Hertfordshire, Great Britain. A large portion of the Roman city remains unexcavated, being now park and agricultural land, though much has been built upon. The Roman settlement was granted the rank of municipium in c. 50 AD, meaning its citizens had what were known as ‘Latin Rights’, a lesser citizenship status than a colonia possessed. It grew to a significant town, and as such received the attentions of Boudica of the Iceni in AD 61, when Verulamium was sacked and burnt: a black ash layer has been recorded by archaeologists, thus confirming the Roman written record. It grew steadily: by the early 3rd century it covered an area of about 125 acres (0.51 km2), behind a deep ditch and wall. It is the location of the martyrdom of the first British martyr saint, St Alban, who was a Roman patrician converted by the priest Amphibalus.

Tour includes : Roman Walls, Roman Gatehouses, Hypercaust system, Roman Mosaics, Roman Theatre, Roman Workshops, Verulanium Museum and a visit to the Cathedral and surrounding landscape.

Tour is limited to 20 persons – Attendance is free.  (First come, first served) Duration – 3-4 hours. There is a small entry fee to the Roman Theater and Verulamium Museum. For those wishing to grab a late lunch, we will continue onto Ye-Old Fighting Cocks for a late lunch and pint next to the River Ye.
